A bunch of modest wee instrumentals recorded on my phone, one a day for the last few days. The feel is there - of course, they are laden with imperfections but also a helpful exercise to begin to get 'match fit' again. With hardly any gigs since early 2020, it's been a financial and emotional challenge for us small-scale touring musicians, and playing these tunes has been a step towards gradually feeling better.
Covid + Brexit = Sandwich du Merde.
Once I've got my focus and confidence back, there's every possibility that they will manifest into new creatures, with lyrics and/or gifted collaborators. And at some point, there's a 50/50 chance the next album will be a double album. We'll see.
In some ways, it's almost like starting again. The sonic fidelity of these songs partly reminds me of my first ever solo release from 2013, Friendly Demons - scratchy, flawed and adorned with me breathing heavily. Some things never change; some things do.
I've never been more aware of folk I know and love struggling so hard. For many people, life is increasingly plummeting into mere existence and survival BUT I hope there's a way through for all of us, a place where the spirit inside each of us can still burn bright and undimmed, despite the travails.
The miracle I pray for is a kinder world.
Here's to vibrant community and reaching out to each other.
